What is a marine aids service technician?

As a Marine Aids Service Technician with the Canadian Coast Guard, you install, configure, maintain, and repair electrical, mechanical, and electronically-controlled power generation and distribution systems for lightstations, fog horns, and communication towers. Some aids to navigation sites are located in remote places and require travel by boat, helicopter, all-terrain vehicle, or snowmobile.


Your responsibilities as a Marine Aids Service Technician include:

  • installing, troubleshooting, testing, maintaining, and repairing electrical and mechanical equipment and systems
  • communicating to both technical and non-technical audiences through written reports, oral communication, and correspondence
  • travelling to remote locations

Where you will work

Positions may be based at National Headquarters (in Ottawa, Ontario), or in one of the Coast Guard’s stations across the country:

  • British Columbia (Western Region)
  • Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec (Central and Arctic Region)
  • New Brunswich, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Prince Edward Island (Atlantic Region)

Training and education requirements

To become a Marine Aids Service Technician with the Canadian Coast Guard, you must be certified as an electrical or mechanical technician. The training program you take should emphasize installation, troubleshooting, testing, and maintenance of electrical or mechanical systems and equipment.

If you were educated outside of Canada, you must have your certificates and/or diplomas reviewed under Canadian education standards. Recent field experience is an asset. To gain field experience, you should take advantage of the co-op program at the institution you are attending.
